Just getting to the start of our trip in Patagonia was an adventure in itself. We didn’t take too many photos along the way, but the brief synopsis of the ~48 hrs of transit was:
- 8 hour drive from CT to Pittsburgh to drop Monte off with my parents. Snapping and snarling between Monte and Penny has mostly been reduced to casual disinterest, so at least they’re making progress. Stayed overnight in Pittsburgh to get Monte settled and got a ride to the airport in the morning.
- ~4 hour hop from PIT to IAH followed by about 5 hours of layover in Houston
- ~9.5 hour flight from IAH to SCL, where we had to disembark for passport control and customs and go back through security for the final intra-Chile leg. Luckily we were able to get through that with some time to spare in our 4 hours layover.
- Short 2-hour flight into Puerto Montt with a 30 minute taxi to our AirBnB in Puerto Varas that’ll serve as home base and bag storage for the week on the motorcycle.
Luckily everything has gone smoothly and we’re here chilling in Puerto Varas enjoying the general relaxed vibes, local restaurants, and volcanic backdrop before we head to get the motorcycle tomorrow.

Despite Tori and I both having pretty extensive international travel experience, the main surprise has been that we can’t fall back on English as easily here as we’ve been able to in Europe where it’s the default common tongue. So far Tori’s high school Spanish has gotten us through, but we’re only going to be getting more remote for the next two weeks.
